Blair’s apology for slavery

Monday, November 27th, 2006

There has been a great deal made of Blair’s “apology” for the British empire’s role in slavery.

Slavery is wrong, there is no doubt about that.

However, it should not be forgotten that the majority of African slaves were “bought” from African kings and merchants in exchange for a variety of products. Especially guns.

The Africans were enslaved by their own rulers. The European nations took advantage of their greed.

There were some exceptions, and history does record a number of military campaigns to capture slaves, but these account for a very small minority of the 10 million slaves that were traded between 1650 & 1900.

Blair’s apology is nothing more than a farcical attempt to win favor for Labour with British African voters.

Perhaps we should ask for apologies from the Danes for their Viking raiding parties?

Second Life

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

I’m addicted to Second Life.

If you haven’t heard of it, Second Life is a virtual world. It is *not* a game. If anything, it is closer to being a cross between 3 dimension chat and 3 dimensional web. It is a place where you can build a virtual home, invite your virtual friends round, and have a virtual party with them.

The great thing is, Second Life is a blank canvas. You can build want you want in it, and program those objects using the Second Life scripting language to give them behavior. This makes it the perfect virtual environment, allowing me to express my creativity in my down time.

It is also fascinating how some real life companies have begun to leverage Second Life, and you are now beginning to see a cross over between Second Life and Real Life businesses.

If you visit, send an IM (instant message) to my avatar, “Electro Spark”.

Moving

I’m not moving… the site is. I’m just in the process of moving it to a new host. It’ll take 48 hours or so for the DNS changes to propogate.

Beckham quits as England captain

About bloody time….

There is something just “wrong” about people that earn their living playing for foreign teams and then represent Britain in internationals, and vice versa.

For The Love Of Chocolate

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

My parents are staying at the moment, and, as the Brighton Festival is kicking into life, we decided to take them out to one of the “events” that are on.

So we decided to go to “Amanda Warring’s”:http://www.amandawaring.com/ Wednesday’s production, “For The Love Of Chocolate”:http://www.amandawaring.com/index.php?module=Website&action=Text&content=1126795478364-3711 at the Sussex Arts Centre on Ship Street.

It was absolutely brilliant! Funny, very entertaining, and with a decidedly ‘chocolaty’ theme, it is well worth watching!

There was a girl filming from the “Beeb”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/, and I noticed that there was an article on the local news on Thursday.

I really hope that she wins the Best Show of the Festival.

Rip Off Britain

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

My Powerbook is having a bad year. In addition to it’s existing woes, I caught the power cord with my foot the other day, and bent the connector as well as stressing the cord a bit. Its been working intermittently if I give it a bit of a wiggle, but on Thursday night it let off a big plume of smoke, there was a lovely acrid smell of molten plastic, and lights off. The Powerbook only has 11 minutes of power left, so I’m typing this on an old aging Sony VAIO.

I’ve ordered a new power adapter until the new Macintel arrives. But I’m not happy. Apple in the UK charge AAL55 for a replacement power adapter. That is absoluely ridiculous. Looking at the prices on the US store, $79, which isn’t much better. But actually, not too bad all things considered. Either way, its too much for an adapter, so I decided to shop around.

I checked with “Cancom”:http://www.cancomuk.com/ and they’ve got a “Macally adapter”:http://www.macally-europe.com/productpage.php?product=400 for AAL41 (including shipping). So, I’ve ordered one, and its due to arrive on Monday. In the rest of Europe this adapter costs Aca

Poorly Powerbook

Poorly Powerbook Screen

A while ago my Powerbook screen started acting up… every now and then the bottom third of the screen flickers and vanishes, and the rest of the time when the bottom third is visible, a green line a pixel wide can be seen about a third of the way from the left edge.

Unfortunately, the guarantee has just ran out, and I’ve been told it will cost about 350 pounds to replace the screen. No AppleCare.

Oh, and on top of that, I dropped it. Tonki jumped on it while it was perched on my knee.

Dont drop 'em

Although it didnt have far to fall (about 2 foot max), it landed right on the corner.

It mangled the case a bit, but apart from that, you wouldnt know any different… and it is not related in any way to the screen being faulty. It was already faulty.

The worst thing is, I cant bare the idea of being without it for any amount of time, and is my main machine!!!
